CROCODILES // TEARDROP GUITAR // FRENCH KISS RECORDS

“The video is a low-budget marvel which brings the song’s aesthetic to life, augmenting its VHS-filmed graininess with sparkly falling teardrops, television static — something that sparks the imagination of those of us old enough to remember but young enough to not watch TV on an actual TV anymore.

A music video can heighten the appeal of a song almost instantaneously. We were convinced Tyler, the Creator was our next great hip-hop artiste because of “Yonkers.” The video for “Teardrop Guitar” not only serves the purpose of being a pretty great video, but it also enforces the idea that being capturing people’s imagination as a great rock ‘n roll band requires more than writing great rock ‘n roll songs.”

BECOMING REAL // SNOW DRIFT LOVE // NOT EVEN RECORDS

“The music video, directed by Matthew Reed, is by far the best way to experience this evocative track. Images flash as shapes come and go in a series of fast edits, creating a layering of shots that progress with the track. These visuals fit beautifully, enhancing the aesthetics of the track whilst providing context and texture to its’ suggestive imagery. This, as well as trying it’s hardest to give the viewer an epileptic seizure, deems the piece nothing short of an audio-visual wet dream.”

BECOMING REAL // SLOW MEMORY // NOT EVEN RECORDS

“The video for ‘Slow Memory’, directed by long-time collaborator Matthew Reed, continues a trend of murky and dream-like promos that show an auteur’s interest in coining a distinct look.”

CYMBALS // EROSION // TOUGH LOVE RECORDS

“The fluid CGI landscape of dance-pop band CYMBALS’ new video was inspired by Marxist writer Marshall Berman’s 1970 book All That Is Solid Melts Into Air, which comes alive as singer Jack Cleverly is rendered as marionette-like (and then headless) against green-screen backgrounds straight out of Windows 98. Director Matthew Reed sifted through back of the web-sofa fluff for the stickiest memes and tropes to form the “HD sludge” which CYMBALS are subsumed by. URL vs IRL unfurls before our eyes, and it sounds so sweet.”
